Last season, the Utah Jazz advanced to the Western Conference semifinals behind the playmaking of Deron Williams and the inside presence of Carlos Boozer.
A new scoring combination has emerged this season.Williams and Paul Millsap try to lead the Jazz to their third straight victory when they visit the Chicago Bulls on Saturday.
After back-to-back Northwest Division titles, Utah (17-11) is currently in third place, a game back of division-leading Denver. Injuries are a big reason why the Jazz are not atop the division, as Williams and Boozer have each missed time.
Williams, who missed 13 of Utah's first 15 games after spraining his ankle in a preseason game at the United Center on Oct. 18, had one of his best performances of the season Friday. He scored a season-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting and dished out eight assists in Utah's 120-114 double overtime victory over Detroit.
Millsap finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds on Friday in another stellar outing in place of Boozer, who is out with a strained left quadriceps. Millsap is averaging 18.3 points and 11.3 boards in 15 straight starts for Boozer with 14 straight double-doubles.
After opening their five-game road trip with a 100-91 loss to league-leading Boston on Monday, the Jazz have won their last two games. This is the fourth time Utah has won back-to-back games since starting the season 5-0.
"We just need to keep playing," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "We continue to come out a little sluggish, but I was very happy with our second half, especially the two young guys."
Williams and Boozer both missed Utah's first meeting this season against the Bulls (12-14), a 101-100 home loss on Nov. 24. Down by one in the final seconds, Chicago's Derrick Rose took an 18-foot jumper that bounced high off the rim and right to Larry Hughes, who beat the buzzer from 22 feet.
The Jazz have lost their last two games against the Bulls after winning the previous four meetings.
Chicago, which has alternated wins and losses in its last six games, fell to Boston 126-108 on Friday for its 11th loss in 14 road games.
The Bulls have had much more success at the United Center, going 9-3 on their home court. Chicago, which has won three of its last four home games against Utah, is averaging 112.5 points during a four-game winning streak at the United Center.
On Friday, Drew Gooden sprained his right ankle in the first quarter and Tyrus Thomas did not play after sustaining a concussion in Wednesday's 115-109 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Clippers. Without those two big men, Chicago could do little to slow down the defending NBA champions, as they allowed opponent season highs in points and field goal percentage (59.5 percent).
"Playing against a team like this, you need all your guys. Drew's a big part of what we do," guard Ben Gordon said. "We tried to give them a little resistance but we just didn't have enough manpower."
Gordon tallied 10 points, five turnovers and one assist on Friday after averaging 25.5 points in his previous four games. Gordon, who is averaging a team-best 20.7 points, had 15 points in last month's win over the Jazz.
Rose, who had 14 points and five assists against the Celtics, finished with 25 points and nine assists in the win over Utah.
