The last time the Chicago Bulls won consecutive road games against the New Jersey Nets, Michael Jordan was about to lead them to their most recent NBA title in his final season with the team.
Simply looking to reach the postseason this time, the Bulls try to do it again Wednesday night against the Nets, who hope to build off an improbable victory in their last contest.Chicago's 100-87 win at New Jersey on Dec. 29 snapped a 13-game road losing streak in the series. It was the Bulls' second victory in 18 games in New Jersey.
"It was crazy, man, crazy, that it had been that long," said Bulls guard Ben Gordon after the team's first victory there since April 17, 2001.
The Bulls (26-31) haven't won two straight over the Nets on the road since the Jordan-led team did it during the 1997-98 season.
Though Chicago is coming off a 120-102 rout of Southeast Division-leading Orlando on Tuesday, repeating that feat in New Jersey likely won't be easy.
Chicago has lost three of its last five on the road since winning three in a row away from home. The Nets (25-32), meanwhile, snapped a five-game losing steak after Devin Harris' 47-footer beat the buzzer for a 98-96 win over Philadelphia on Monday.
"It's definitely a relief," Harris told the Nets' official Web site. "You take this one, stow it away and move forward from here."
With Chicago ninth in the Eastern Conference and New Jersey one game behind in 10th, wins are at a premium for both clubs.
In addition to the road win, the Bulls won 113-104 at home over the Nets on Dec. 13 and have taken the last three meetings.
Rookie Derrick Rose had 22 points, Gordon added 20 and recent additions Tim Thomas, John Salmons and Brad Miller combined for 37 off the bench Tuesday for the Bulls. Chicago shot a season-high 56.5 percent to win for the eighth time in 12 games.
"We have guys coming off the bench that know how to play," said Thomas, in his second stint with the Bulls. "We pretty much have all the pieces."
Rose has 43 points and 19 assists in the two games against New Jersey, while Gordon has scored 53 points over both contests.
This is the first meeting since Rose beat Harris in the Skills Challenge during All-Star weekend in Phoenix.
"He's a talented fellow and it'll be a good matchup for us (Wednesday), said Harris of Rose, who is averaging 16.7 points and 6.3 assists.
Harris finished with 39 points on 11-for-22 shooting and eight assists against Philadelphia. Officials had to watch replays for 2 1/2 minutes before confirming his last-second heave beat the buzzer.
"After the review, everyone was jumping up and down, going crazy," said Harris, who is averaging 21.9 points on the season and has 65 with 18 assists in his last two contests. "We'll take it any way we can."
While Harris has 48 points combined against Chicago this season, teammate Vince Carter has games of 31 and 39 points against the Bulls in 2008-09. Carter, though, has been held to 42 total points in his last three games overall.
